Pitt-Rivers A. Lane-Fox
(1827-1900)
A controversial and eccentric aristocrat who was a general in the British army, landowner, archaeologist, anthropologist, and government inspector. He has been called the ‘father of scientific archaeology’, having excavated over forty classic sites in the United Kingdom. He was also an anthropologist and follower of Charles Darwin, advocating a gradualist evolutionary doctrine.
